15 Years of Building SEO Systems That Perform

With over 15 years in SEO and digital marketing, I have consistently built systems that outperform the market. My career has been driven by a simple principle: question assumptions, operate from first principles, and design strategies that serve your objectives – not someone else’s narrative.

I began my journey at Havas Media, honing my skills in client management, technical auditing, and strategic planning for brands including Tesco Bank, Thomas Cook, and Domino’s Pizza.

At Forward3D, I led a talented team managing natural search for high-profile legal clients, and spearheaded SEO efforts within Interpublic Group (IPG Mediabrands), overseeing campaigns across a diverse portfolio of national and international brands.

Working inside large agency environments provided invaluable insight into how big networks operate – and how their incentives often compromise performance in favour of predictability. I saw how traditional frameworks could deliver incremental gains but rarely built sustainable competitive advantage.

This realisation set the stage for a more independent, systems-driven approach.

My time at the independent London agency Barracuda Digital marked a pivotal shift in my career. Moving into senior leadership and ultimately stepping into the role of Commercial Director and Chief Product Strategist, I finally had the autonomy to challenge established assumptions and test strategies that were often at odds with the incentives and risk aversion I’d seen in larger networks. I led the transformation of the agency’s SEO offering, placing great emphasis on site control, UX design, information architecture, and clear performance accountability.

Those years produced record-breaking results and refined the principles that became the foundations of Sovereign SEO. My strategic initiatives delivered continuous year-over-year growth for five straight years, the successful acquisition and retention of high-profile national brands, and industry recognition via The Drum and the UK Search Awards.

Today, I work directly with ambitious businesses that sense something isn’t quite right with their SEO.

Often, they’ve done everything they were told to do. They’ve rebuilt the site. Put the ‘user’ first. Published more content. Invested in “optimisation”. On paper, it all looks sensible.

Yet performance has stalled – or worse, declined.

I call this the SEO Lollapalooza: a convergence of incentives, assumptions, and structural missteps that quietly dilute authority and starve the pages that actually drive revenue.

Most teams caught in it don’t realise what’s happening. They blame algorithm updates. They commission more content. They increase spend. The underlying structural issue remains untouched.

That’s where I come in.

I’m not interested in churning out five articles a month or padding out statements of work with activity that looks busy but compounds nothing. I don’t sell volume. I don’t sell vanity metrics.

I look for businesses that already have authority – businesses that should be winning – but are trapped in a structure that prevents their strongest pages from maturing.

My work is about restoring control.

Sovereign SEO is the exit from the Lollapalooza.

The Machine Experience execution framework is the vehicle we use to take that exit.

It means treating authority as capital, restructuring how it flows, and rebuilding the engine that determines which pages compound and which pages starve.

When that foundation is corrected, performance comes back under control. Growth feels deliberate, and SEO becomes a compounding system – not a treadmill.

If you’re ready to take back control of your SEO and build a system that compounds value over time, you’re in the right place.
